Unlike most other gemstones which are mineral in origin, Coral is organic, formed by living organisms, and is chemically similar to pearls. It was once believed to be a plant but actually consists of living animals called 'polyps'. Coral is the accumulated skeletal masses from these polyps and is polished to create these gemstones for jewellery.
